Compression Curves and Values

The compression curves and surface values are created during diffusion.  The gas atoms of Nitrogen and Carbon, introduced after the steel attains its proper temperature, diffuse into the steel's surface.

This creates a nano-atomic structure which in effect stretches the surface as the Nitrogen and Carbon are diffused.  Tensile and compressive stresses are in opposition to one another.  As the atoms continue to stretch the surface of the steel an opposing layer of beneficial compressive layer is created in the diffused zone.  In combination with this, a compound layer is created.

It is well known in physics that cracks (tensile stresses) cannot propagate into or through a layer of compression unless the yield strength of the steel is exceeded.  Consequently, by the diffusion, the fatigue strength of the steel is increased by a moderate levels when compared to the depth and value of the MetaLLife process.  Nonetheless, the ThermaLLife compression is also beneficial in extending normal tool life.
