This graph shows a comparison between a standard nitrocarburized profile and that of a
Qab profile (chromium carbonitride).  Hardness is sustained to a much greater depth. The
difference between this CrCN and a PVD is that the material is diffused instead of 
deposited and the substrate below the compound layer is altered to a higher hardness, 
thus supplying the two missing qualities of today's PVD coatings.

This graph shows a compound layer hardness comparison of CrCN v/s NC.
The "X" axis shows the depth of the compound layer in microns
The "Y" axis shows the hardness in vickers (VHN).
The compound layer is indicated by the slanted white lines - about 28 microns.
The chromium carbonitride is represented by the "red" line
The nitrocarburized profile is represented by the "blue" line
