The compound layer can have a depth of 5-20 microns = .0002-.0008 inches
The sub-surface diffused layer ranges from 102-203 microns = .004-.008 inches



Carbon 4150 steel treated at 700 oC for 2hrs in an atmosphere
 of 49% N2, 50% NH3 and 1% CH4.
