Aluminum 390 Alloy has a high content of Silicon (Si).  Various covalent bonds of the Al, Fe, and Si are therefore formed when the barrier is lost.
  • Hot spots on the die's surface can eventually cause a loss of lubricant by burn off.

  • Since aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) have a natural affinity for each other, the loss of lubricant, temperature of the metal and impingement of the aluminum weaken the surface which leads to chemical changes to the die's surface.

  • Over the time, temperature, and velocity combinations, the aluminum impinges on the surface to interact with the iron to form an intermetallic covalent bond.  Chemical corrosion
