Curves and Graphs for tool steel
Compressive Stress + Nitrocarburizing = Longer Tool Life
The compressive stress factor of MetaLLifeÒ offers an increase of 30-40% of the effective yield strength of tool steel.  When combined with our TherMaLL ifeÒ  nitrocarburizing process, tooling has then both fatigue and wear resistance.
TherMaLL ifeÒ  is not recommended for D-2 unless final temper was done at above 1000 degrees F.

The microstructure of a ferritic nitrocarburized H-13 surface shows an epsilon compound layer that is .0002" to .0008" in depth followed by the sub-surface diffusion zone (carbon/nitrogen) ranging in depth from .004" to .008" (dependent on processing criteria) which gradually dissipates.
